Contest and Competitions
NANOWRIMO- National Novel Writing Month- November 1st through November 30th
This website is particularly for young writers and has fun downloadable workbooks and other tips and advice. Every November thousands of writers join in to write a 50,000 word novel in just one month. My 13-year-old son took and completed the challenge just this past year. http://ywp.nanowrimo.org/

Products
Bare Books
These bare books really encourage writing. Students can fill out the blank pages to create their own picture books, chapter books, and comic books. They even have blank puzzles and calendars. The price is really low so you can order a bunch. The final product really looks professional. www.barebooks.com

Mighty Authors
This website allows students to type in their stories and upload their own artwork, then they can purchase a copy of their own “real” book for a reasonable price. The site has recently been acquired by BYU’s McKay School of Education. It is currently under construction but I am excited to see the new and improved version when it is ready.

Good Books on the Writing Process
For Older Students

On Writing by Stephen King
I know. I thought the same thing, but you do not need to like Stephen King or have read any of his books to learn from this one. This book is highly motivating with good advice that really makes you want to write.

Zen in the Art of Writing: Releasing the Creative Genius within you by Ray Bradbury Another glimpse into the life and mind of a writer. This includes fun essays about Bradbury’s writing habits and where his ideas come from. This is one of Melissa’s favorite books on the writing process. http://www.amazon.com/Zen-Art-Writing-Releasing-Creative/dp/0553296345/ref=pd_vtp_b_1
